NORTHLAND TANIWHA PLAYER MATT WRIGHT RETIRES


Matt Wright, who is a born and bred Northlander, who plays club rugby for Wellsford Rugby has announced his retirement. Matt has played 55 games for the Taniwha over his career and played 7 games this 2020 season.

Taniwha Head Coach George Konia had the following to say about Matt.

“His leadership, positive attitude and performances on and off the field has placed Matty as one of our most respected members of our squad. He is a fantastic rugby player and on his day produced moments of brilliance which were special to be part of. We wish him and his family all the best and look forward to catching up, here in Northland.”

Upon his retirement, Matt had the following to say.

“I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped me in the past few years, especially my family and close friends. I’ve loved every minute of it and I have made some lifelong friends along the way. This year was full of career highlights for me, with making the final, getting 50 caps with a handful of brothers and playing alongside my actual brother in his 100th. Finally, I want to thank Northland Rugby and everyone behind the scenes for all their support and wish them the best for the future. Up the Tanis!”
